Personality Disorders

Personality disorders can affect how you think, feel, react, relate to others and see yourself. The patterns of personality disorders are usually long-standing, and that can make them hard to recognize and even harder to change without support. You may want healthier relationships, better control over your emotions or more stability, but still feel pulled into the same cycles over and over again.

At Green Springs Wellness, we provide personality disorders treatment in NJ for adults struggling with emotional regulation, relationship conflict, impulsive behavior, mistrust, avoidance, identity instability or co-occurring substance use. Treatment usually focuses on awareness, coping skills, healthier relationships and long-term stability.

If you’re looking for personality disorders therapy in NJ, Green Springs Wellness can help you find the right level of mental health treatment.

What Are Personality Disorders?

Everyone has personality traits. For example, some people are more cautious, sensitive, independent, intense, private or approval-seeking than others. A personality disorder can become a concern when patterns in thinking, emotion and behavior are persistent and also distressing and disruptive across different areas of life.

Personality disorders are grouped into broad categories. Cluster A disorders involve suspicious, detached or unusual patterns. Cluster B disorders involve intense emotions, impulsivity, unstable relationships or a fragile sense of self. Cluster C disorders can involve anxious, fearful, avoidant or dependent patterns.

Examples include:

  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Narcissistic personality disorder
  • Avoidance personality disorder
  • Dependent personality disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder
  • Paranoid personality disorder

A diagnosis doesn’t define your character, but it gives a name to patterns that could be causing you pain, conflict or instability so those can be addressed in treatment.

Signs and Symptoms of Personality Disorders

Personality disorder symptoms can vary depending on both the person and the condition. Some people might become emotionally reactive and overwhelmed, while others withdraw, avoid closeness, mistrust others or try to maintain control because they feel unsafe when there’s uncertainty.

Common signs can include:

  • Intense emotional reactions that are hard to control
  • Relationships that are unstable, conflict-heavy or distant
  • Strong fear of rejection, abandonment or criticism
  • Problems trusting other people
  • Making impulsive decisions that then lead to consequences
  • Rigid thinking or having a hard time with change
  • Chronic emptiness, shame or identity confusion
  • Anger, defensiveness or emotional shutdown
  • The need for control, approval or reassurance
  • Avoiding closeness even when you want connection
  • Trouble seeing how your behavior affects others
  • Self-sabotaging patterns at work, home or in recovery
  • Substance use as a way to deal with things like distress, conflict or emptiness

Symptoms of personality disorders are usually most noticeable in relationships. You might function well professionally or socially in certain settings but repeatedly struggle in family, romantic, work or close personal dynamics. These problems in your relationships can then lead to shame, confusion and the feeling that the same problems keep happening no matter how hard you try.

When Do Personality Patterns Need Professional Treatment?

Personality traits become a concern that may need treatment when they repeatedly lead to distress, conflict, isolation, impulsive behavior or instability. A lot of people don’t seek help because they assume it’s just how they are, but in reality, long-standing patterns can be understood and changed with the right support.

Professional treatment can help if you keep repeating painful relationship cycles, feel easily triggered, use anger or withdrawal to cope, struggle with self-worth or have trouble maintaining responsibilities in various areas of your life.

Treatment can also be important if you find that you’re using alcohol or drugs to manage emotions, shame, loneliness or relationship stress.

Therapy is a way to help you recognize patterns earlier and build more stable responses.

Personality Disorders and Addiction

Personality disorders and addiction often overlap because substances might become a way to manage things like emotional pain, rejection, emptiness, loneliness or relationship conflict. At the moment, drugs or alcohol might seem like they calm your intense feelings or create distance from distress, but over time, they usually end up making patterns worse.

A common cycle can start with a trigger like criticism, mistrust or feeling rejected. Then, you feel overwhelmed, angry, ashamed or numb, so alcohol or drugs provide short-term relief or escape. The substance use then creates more consequences like arguments, impulsive decisions, missed responsibilities or deeper instability.

Addiction can also make a personality disorder harder to manage. Intoxication, withdrawal and cravings can make you more impulsive, your moods less stable, and your decision-making poorer. If both issues are going on, treatment needs to address the emotional patterns and the substance use cycle.

Dual Diagnosis Personality Disorders NJ Treatment

Dual diagnosis personality disorders treatment may be appropriate if personality disorder symptoms and substance use happen together. Examples include borderline personality symptoms with alcohol misuse, avoidant patterns with cannabis use to manage social fear, shame-driven substance use after conflict or impulsive drug use during emotional crashes.

Integrated treatment becomes important because one issue can keep fueling the other. If addiction is treated but emotional and relationship patterns aren’t addressed, relapse risk can stay high. If personality disorder symptoms are treated but substance use continues, therapy might be disrupted by ongoing instability or avoidance.

At Green Springs Wellness, our dual diagnosis care focuses on the full picture and treatment may include therapy, relapse prevention, emotional regulation, communication skills, boundary work, trauma-informed support and help recognizing patterns before they escalate.

Our Approach to Personality Disorders Therapy in NJ

Personality disorder treatment needs to be compassionate, structured and practical. At Green Springs Wellness, care starts with a comprehensive assessment, which is our team’s chance to get to know your symptoms, patterns, history, prior treatment and how you’re functioning currently.

Individual therapy is often a big part of our treatment plans, and you work with a therapist one-on-one to identify patterns in your thoughts, emotions, reactions and relationships. This could include what triggers your emotional instability, mistrust, avoidance, defensiveness or impulsivity.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills are frequently helpful for personality disorder symptoms because they focus on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and reducing behaviors that are self-destructive. These skills can help you pause before you react, handle conflict more effectively and deal with your tough emotions without making the situation worse.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can also be used as part of treating personality disorders. In CBT, you work with your therapist to examine your beliefs about yourself, other people and safety. For example, maybe you expect rejection or feel conflict means abandonment, but therapy helps you question these patterns and then practice different responses.

Trauma-informed care can also be important because a lot of personality disorder symptoms are connected to early experiences, attachment wounds, instability or trauma.

If you have a dual diagnosis, relapse prevention is included in your treatment plan so emotional triggers, shame, anger or emptiness are connected to substance use patterns.

In some cases, family support and therapy may be part of your treatment plan, especially when communication, boundaries and expectations may need to change.

Levels of Care for Personality Disorders Treatment

The right level of care depends on how severe your symptoms are, but also on other factors like safety, substance use, emotional stability, how you function day to day and the support you have at home. We offer multiple levels of care so you get treatment that fits your needs.

The partial hospitalization program (PHP) is our highest level of outpatient care, which is intensive and very structured. You get frequent clinical support that can help when emotional instability, impulsive behavior, conflict or co-occurring symptoms are causing a lot of disruption to your daily life, but inpatient treatment isn’t needed.

A step down from PHP is an intensive outpatient program, or IOP. You can expect to participate in therapy several days a week while living at home or in a supportive environment. You get a chance to practice new skills in daily life, but you receive more than weekly therapy.

Outpatient or OP is appropriate if you’re stable enough to maintain with less frequent therapy, but you do still need ongoing support for emotional regulation, relationships, relapse prevention and long-term coping.

If you have a dependence on drugs or alcohol, detox placement may be something you need before you really start the deeper work of personality disorder treatment. Detox helps stabilize withdrawal symptoms you may experience so you’re able to engage more fully in treatment.

FAQs About Personality Disorders Treatment in NJ

Can personality disorders be treated?

Yes. Treatment can help you recognize long-standing patterns, identify your emotions, improve relationships and respond to triggers in healthier ways. Progress takes time, but change is absolutely possible with consistent support.

Does having a personality disorder mean something is wrong with my character?

No. A personality disorder is a mental health condition and not a moral failure. Diagnosis helps identify patterns that may be causing you distress or conflict, so they can be addressed in treatment.

Why do personality disorders and addiction often happen together?

Substances may be used to cope with shame, anger, emptiness, rejection, anxiety or other negative feelings. Over time, though, using substances can make instability worse and patterns harder to change.

How do I pay for personality disorder treatment?

Many clients will use insurance to help cover personality disorder therapy and other behavioral health services. If you reach out to us, we can confidentially verify your benefits and then explain your coverage and any expected out-of-pocket costs before starting treatment.
