Grief and Loss

Grief can affect every part of your life, changing how you sleep, eat, think, work, relate to others and see the future. Some people expect grief only after a death, but loss can take a lot of forms. Divorce, illness, miscarriage, estrangement, job loss, addiction, trauma and major life changes can all leave you feeling emotionally unstable and unsure how to move forward.

At Green Springs Wellness, we provide grief and loss treatment in NJ for adults who need support after a painful experience. In treatment, we don’t try to get you to forget what happened or rush you to move on. Instead, it’s about learning how to live with the loss, manage tough emotions and start rebuilding stability in a way that feels realistic.

When Grief Becomes Hard to Manage Alone

Grief doesn’t follow a clean timeline. Some people feel intense emotion right away, while others feel numb for weeks or months before the weight of the loss fully hits them. There may be moments where you feel fine, followed by sudden waves of sadness, anger, guilt or fear.

You could benefit from grief and loss therapy in NJ if your grief is affecting your ability to function or care for yourself, and common signs include:

  • Ongoing sadness, emptiness or emotional numbness.
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much.
  • Loss of appetite or using eating as a way to cope.
  • Guilt, regret or repeated what-if thoughts.
  • Anger, irritability or resentment.
  • Avoiding people, places or memories that are connected to the loss.
  • Feeling disconnected from your friends or family.
  • Problems keeping up with work, school or responsibilities.
  • Increased alcohol or drug use.
  • Feeling hopeless, stuck or like you can't imagine the future.

Needing help doesn’t mean that you’re grieving the wrong way, but it does mean the pain has gotten too heavy for you to carry without support.

Types of Loss That May Lead to Treatment

Grief is often associated with the death of a loved one, but you can grieve a lot of different types of losses. You could be grieving the loss of a spouse, parent, child, sibling, friend or partner. You can also grieve after divorce, a breakup, a major health diagnosis, infertility, pregnancy loss, retirement or a major change in identity.

Some losses can be especially complicated because they don’t have a clear ending. Estrangement from a family member, the effects of addiction, incarceration, chronic illness or watching someone change because of substance use can all create grief that’s hard to explain to others. You could feel sadness, anger, guilt, relief and confusion at the same time.

In treatment, you have the space to sort through those emotions without judgment.

Grief, Loss and Addiction

Grief, loss and addiction can become closely connected. After a loss, some people turn to drugs or alcohol to sleep, numb pain, stop intrusive thoughts or just make it through the day. At first, substance use can feel like relief, but over time it can make it harder to process grief and also increase symptoms of depression, anxiety, isolation and impulsivity.

Grief can also be a major relapse trigger for people in recovery. Anniversaries, holidays, family conflict, funeral arrangements, estate issues or sudden reminders of the loss can bring up intense urges to use. Someone might not even realize the connection at first and may just know they feel overwhelmed and want the feeling to stop.

There’s another side to this as well. Families often grieve the effects of a loved one’s addiction while that person is still alive. They could be grieving things like trust, safety, closeness, financial stability or the version of the person they once knew. Overdose deaths and addiction-related trauma can also leave loved ones with complicated grief, guilt and unanswered questions.

Dual Diagnosis Grief and Loss NJ Treatment

Dual diagnosis grief and loss NJ treatment may be appropriate when grief overlaps with substance use, depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma or another mental health condition. These concerns can feed into each other. For example, grief can make depression worse, depression can increase isolation, and isolation can elevate the urge to drink or use drugs.

If just one part of the problem gets treated, it can leave you feeling stuck, so at Green Springs Wellness, care is designed to address grief and related mental health or substance use concerns together. This might include therapy, coping skills, emotional regulation, relapse prevention, trauma-informed support and help rebuilding daily structure.

Dual diagnosis care can be especially important if you’re using substances as a way to cope, have panic symptoms, struggle with intrusive memories, feel emotionally unstable or find it hard to stay engaged in your recovery.

Our Approach to Grief and Loss Therapy in NJ

Grief treatment should be personal because no two losses are the same, so you shouldn’t be pushed through a preset process. At Green Springs Wellness, treatment focuses on understanding what the loss means to you and how it’s affecting your life now.

Individual therapy is a place where you can talk honestly about the loss, including things you might avoid sharing with family. These can include anger, guilt, resentment, numbness or relief.

Cognitive behavioral therapy can help you work through painful thoughts that keep you stuck. These might include things like “I should have done more” or “This is my fault.” The goal isn’t dismissing your pain but instead is to help you relate to those thoughts in a healthier way.

DBT-informed skills can help if grief is bringing emotional flooding, panic, impulsive decisions, relationship conflict or urges to use substances. DBT skills can help you tolerate painful memories without making them worse.

Trauma-informed care can be used when grief involves sudden death, overdose, violence, medical trauma or other experiences that left you feeling unsafe or overwhelmed.

When it’s appropriate, group support and family involvement can also help reduce isolation and improve communication.

Levels of Care for Grief and Loss Treatment

The right level of care depends on your symptoms, safety, substance use history and ability to function day-to-day. At Green Springs Wellness, we offer multiple levels of care so treatment matches your needs.

A partial hospitalization program or PHP can be appropriate if your grief has become severely disruptive and you need structured daytime support. PHP can help when symptoms affect your ability to work, care for yourself or maintain stability, but you don’t need inpatient hospitalization or treatment.

An intensive outpatient program or IOP offers consistent therapy several days a week, and you keep living at home or in a supportive environment during this time. Often, an IOP is a good fit if you need more than weekly therapy but still have responsibilities like work, school or family care.

Outpatient treatment or OP can be appropriate if you’re stable enough for a lower level of support, but you still need help to process grief, manage symptoms or protect your recovery.

If grief has contributed to alcohol or drug dependence, detox placement may be the first step. Detox addresses physical withdrawal safety before you start deeper emotional work.

During admissions, Green Springs Wellness can help determine which level of care is the best fit.

Healing Doesn’t Mean Forgetting

Many people avoid grief therapy because they worry it means they’re supposed to stop missing the person or stop caring about what happened, but that’s not what treatment is for.

Healing means learning how to carry the loss without being consumed by it. That could mean rebuilding routines, reconnecting with people, returning to work or learning how to live with unanswered questions. For some, it also means protecting sobriety and finding healthier ways to cope with grief when it feels unbearable.

Treatment gives you tools, structure and support while you learn what life can look like after loss.

FAQs About Grief and Loss Treatment in NJ

What if my loss happened a long time ago?

Grief can resurface months or years later, especially during anniversaries, family changes, new stress, sobriety or another major loss. Treatment can still help even if the loss isn’t recent. Therapy gives you the space to look at how grief affects your life now, not just when it first happened.

Can I get help if I feel numb instead of sad?

Yes. Numbness is a common grief response, and some people feel detached, like they can’t cry or feel. That can be confusing and even cause them to feel guilty, but grief therapy can help you understand that shutdown response and safely reconnect with your emotions over time.

Is it normal to feel angry after a loss?

Anger can be part of grief, especially if the loss felt unfair, sudden, preventable or connected to addiction, illness, family conflict or trauma. In treatment, anger isn’t viewed as something bad. It’s explored as part of the pain so it doesn’t damage your relationships, recovery or sense of self.

How do I pay for grief and loss treatment?

Many people use health insurance to help pay for mental health treatment in NJ, including care for grief, substance use or dual diagnosis concerns. Green Springs Wellness can verify your benefits confidentially and explain your coverage before treatment starts, so you have a clearer idea of possible costs and options.
