How Long Does Addiction Treatment Last?

How Long Does Addiction Treatment Last?

One of the most common questions people ask before starting addiction treatment is how long the process will take. There is no single timeline that fits everyone. Treatment length depends on the substance involved, severity and duration of use, withdrawal risk, mental health needs, previous treatment history, relapse risk and progress during care.

Some people begin with medical detox and then transition into structured treatment. Others may enter a partial hospitalization program, intensive outpatient program or outpatient care directly when clinically appropriate.

At Green Springs Wellness in Hillsborough, New Jersey, treatment planning is individualized so clients can receive the level and duration of care that matches their current needs.

Addiction Treatment Is Not a Quick Fix

Substance use disorders can affect the brain, behavior, physical health, emotional regulation, relationships and daily routines. Stopping substance use is important, but lasting recovery often requires time to address the patterns and circumstances that contributed to continued use.

Rather than viewing treatment as a single program with one fixed end date, it can be more useful to think of recovery as a continuum. A person may move from a more intensive level of care into progressively more flexible support as stability improves.

Length of stay is only one part of treatment quality. The appropriate duration should reflect clinical needs, progress, safety, relapse risk and whether a person has enough support to succeed at the next level of care.

Typical Stages of Addiction Treatment

Not everyone needs every stage below, and exact timelines vary. These ranges provide a general picture of how different parts of the recovery continuum may fit together.

1. Medical Detox: Often Several Days to About Two Weeks

For people with physical dependence, detox may be necessary before ongoing addiction treatment begins. The duration depends on the substance, amount and frequency of use, withdrawal symptoms, medical history and other individual factors.

Green Springs Wellness is not an onsite medical detox facility. When detox is clinically appropriate, our team can help coordinate medical detox placement and plan the transition into continuing treatment after medical stabilization.

Detox addresses withdrawal and immediate medical needs. It does not, by itself, address the behavioral, emotional and environmental factors involved in addiction.

2. Residential Treatment: Often 30 to 90 Days or Longer

Some people transition from detox into residential addiction treatment, where they live in a structured treatment environment with around-the-clock support.

Residential programs may last approximately 30, 60 or 90 days, although actual duration depends on the program and individual needs.

Green Springs Wellness does not provide residential treatment onsite. Our Hillsborough facility focuses on PHP, IOP and outpatient levels of care.

3. Partial Hospitalization Program: Often Several Weeks

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides a highly structured daytime treatment schedule while allowing clients to live outside a 24-hour treatment facility.

PHP duration varies according to clinical needs and progress. It may serve as a step-down after a more intensive setting or as a starting point for someone who needs substantial structure but does not require residential care.

4. Intensive Outpatient Program: Often Several Weeks to a Few Months

Intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) provides frequent therapy and recovery support with greater scheduling flexibility than PHP.

Some clients enter IOP after PHP, while others may begin at the IOP level when clinically appropriate. The schedule and duration can change as symptoms, recovery skills and stability improve.

5. Outpatient Treatment: Several Months or Longer

Outpatient treatment generally involves fewer treatment hours than PHP or IOP and may continue for several months or longer depending on individual needs.

Outpatient care can help clients continue therapy, address relapse risk and maintain behavioral health support while managing work, school, family and other responsibilities.

6. Aftercare and Continuing Recovery: Ongoing

Recovery does not necessarily end when a structured treatment program is completed. Aftercare planning may include ongoing therapy, peer support, relapse-prevention strategies, recovery routines and other forms of continuing support.

The type and frequency of support can change over time as recovery becomes more established.

How Long Are PHP, IOP and Outpatient Programs in New Jersey?

Program length should not be determined by a calendar alone. Green Springs Wellness evaluates progress and clinical needs throughout treatment so the level of care can change when appropriate.

PHP

PHP is generally the most structured outpatient level of care offered at Green Springs Wellness. Clients may participate for several weeks before stepping down when clinically appropriate.

IOP

IOP commonly lasts several weeks to a few months, although some clients need more or less time depending on symptoms, relapse risk and recovery progress.

Standard Outpatient

Outpatient treatment may continue for several months or longer because sessions can become less frequent as stability and independence increase.

Aftercare

Continuing-care strategies can remain part of recovery long after formal treatment ends, with the type of support changing according to individual needs.

Factors That Affect How Long Addiction Treatment Lasts

Severity and Duration of Substance Use

Longer or more severe patterns of alcohol or drug use may require additional time to stabilize, build recovery skills and address consequences.

Type of Substance

Alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants and other substances can involve different withdrawal patterns, cravings and treatment considerations.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions

Depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, trauma and other concerns may require integrated treatment alongside substance use.

Previous Relapse or Treatment History

Repeated returns to use or previous treatment episodes can help clinicians identify areas where additional structure or different strategies may be useful.

Recovery Environment

Housing stability, family support, exposure to substances, work demands and access to transportation can influence treatment planning.

Progress During Treatment

Clinical teams can adjust the level and duration of care as clients demonstrate greater stability, coping skills and readiness for more independence.

Why Staying Engaged in Treatment Matters

Recovery skills take time to learn, practice and apply outside treatment. Remaining engaged in appropriate care gives clients more opportunities to recognize triggers, strengthen coping strategies and address mental health or relationship concerns.

More treatment is not automatically better in every situation. The goal is to remain at an appropriate level of care long enough to make meaningful progress and then transition thoughtfully rather than ending support abruptly.

When Is It Time to Step Down to a Lower Level of Care?

Moving from PHP to IOP or from IOP to standard outpatient treatment should be based on clinical progress rather than a predetermined date.

Greater Stability

Substance use, cravings and mental health symptoms are becoming more manageable with the skills developed in treatment.

Improved Coping Skills

The client is increasingly able to recognize triggers, regulate emotions and respond to stress without returning to substance use.

Consistent Participation

Regular engagement in therapy, treatment planning and recovery activities can help demonstrate readiness for greater independence.

A Safer Recovery Environment

Housing, relationships and daily routines provide enough stability to support recovery with fewer structured treatment hours.

Treatment Is Individualized at Green Springs Wellness

Green Springs Wellness provides addiction and mental health treatment in Hillsborough, New Jersey. Rather than assigning every client the same treatment duration, care is matched to current clinical needs and adjusted as recovery progresses.

Clinical Assessment

Treatment planning considers substance use history, mental health symptoms, previous treatment, withdrawal risk, relapse history and current functioning.

Individualized Level of Care

Clients may participate in PHP, IOP or outpatient treatment depending on the amount of structure and support they need.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

When addiction occurs alongside mental health concerns, treatment can address both rather than treating them as unrelated issues.

Continuing-Care Planning

Planning for the next level of care begins before the current phase ends so clients have a clearer path for maintaining progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does addiction treatment usually last?

There is no single treatment length that applies to everyone. Some phases may last several weeks, while outpatient treatment and continuing support can extend for several months or longer. The appropriate duration depends on clinical needs, progress and relapse risk.

Does everyone need 90 days of addiction treatment?

No. Treatment duration should be individualized. Some people may benefit from an extended continuum of care, while others may transition between levels on a different timeline based on their needs and progress.

How long does IOP last?

Intensive outpatient treatment often lasts several weeks to a few months, but exact duration varies. Progress, symptoms, relapse risk and the stability of the recovery environment can all affect the timeline.

What happens after formal addiction treatment ends?

Many people continue using recovery supports after structured treatment. This may include outpatient therapy, peer support, relapse-prevention strategies, healthy routines and other forms of continuing care.

Is needing longer treatment a sign that recovery is not working?

No. Recovery timelines vary. Remaining in an appropriate level of care for longer can reflect an individualized treatment decision based on current needs rather than failure.
